The single-cable desk setup
Modern business laptops increasingly use USB-C as their primary port. With the right docking station, one USB-C cable connects your laptop to: power (charging), one or two external monitors, wired ethernet, keyboard, mouse, and any other peripherals — so picking up the laptop to head to a meeting is one cable disconnect.
This setup improves ergonomics (laptop at eye level on a stand while the monitor does display duty), reduces cable clutter, and makes hot-desking between home and office seamless.
Understanding the terminology
USB-C: The physical connector shape. USB-C ports can carry different protocols at different speeds — not all USB-C ports are equal.
Thunderbolt 4 / USB4: The fastest USB-C protocol. Supports up to two 4K monitors, up to 40Gbps data transfer, and 100W charging. Required for connecting two monitors from one port on most setups. Intel-based Macs and most recent business-class Windows laptops support Thunderbolt 4.
USB 3.2 Gen 2 (USB-C): Slower than Thunderbolt 4 but supports one 4K monitor and is found on more laptops. Sufficient for single-monitor setups.
DisplayLink: A technology that allows docking stations to drive monitors over USB without Thunderbolt. Works on any USB-C or USB-A port but requires a software driver. Reliable but introduces occasional compatibility quirks.
Choosing a docking station
Key questions:
- How many monitors do you need to connect? One 4K monitor: most docks work. Two monitors: you need Thunderbolt 4 support or a DisplayLink dock.
- What ports do you need? USB-A for older peripherals? SD card slot? HDMI vs. DisplayPort?
- How much power does your laptop need? Most docks supply 65–100W of charging. High-performance laptops (gaming-class, mobile workstations) may need 130W+ and require a power adapter.
Recommended mid-range options:
- Caldigit TS4 ($250): Best-in-class Thunderbolt 4 dock with extensive ports. Overkill for most but future-proof.
- Anker 575 USB-C Dock ($150): Excellent value DisplayLink dock, works without Thunderbolt.
- Dell WD19S ($150–200): Reliable business dock from Dell, matches well with Dell laptops.
